Do you clip bolts, plug cams, stack pads, or crush ice?

I do it all. I consider myself a good all around climber. I like to be well versed in all aspect of climbing. Although I find myself in the mountains or on the ice much of the time.

How long have you been an athlete with La Sportiva?

I have been with La Sportiva for 8 years. The support has been amazing and I look forward to many more years to come.

What are some of your lifetime climbing goals?

I would still like to climb the Cassin on Denali with my wife. I have many opportunities to climb routes like this with my clients but getting quality time in the mountains with Kristie is what I cherish most!

Do you have a claim to fame?

I once ate two large pizzas in one sitting.

Do you have any vices?

I love good coffee, good wine and a great golf course!

What makes you tick as a climber and in the real world?

As a climber I like to always be climbing at some level. After 18 years climbing I can't always be super psyched so I try and be patient and always have fun. The psych always comes back! In the real world I love working as a mountain guide and giving my guests a memorable experience. At home I just love spending time with my wife and our cats and dog.

What drives you to climb? The money? The groupies? The fame? What?

What drives me to climb is the actual movement. Often times I don't like the packing or the travel but the actual movement always puts a smile on my face.

What is your favorite movie?

Caddyshack, Gladiator, and the shawshank redemption.

Do you have any nicknames? Explain:

iceman and it has nothing to do with ice climbing? go figure. Also I'm known as the "Dr." as it fits my initials.

What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep? Why?

About 36 hours. Caught high on Mt Huntington in a storm! Trying to retreat was epic. Once at camp I fell asleep with my feet sticking out of the tent and did not wake up for 12 hours.

If you had to be named after one of the 50 states, which would it be?

Probably Washington State. It is where I was born and the Cascades will always be true to my heart.

What did you have for lunch yesterday?

Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich.

If you could hook up a thought monitor to your head, would you see pictures, hear words or would music be playing?

Most likely it would be pictures as I'm always visualizing my next climb.

What really scares you about climbing?

The thought of making a stupid human error and killing myself or someone else. I'm not afraid of big run outs, thin ice pillars etc... but that stupid error frightens me!

If your life was made into a movie, what would it be called?

The life and times of a Mountain Guide

Where would you live if it could be anywhere in the world?

I would split my time between Canmore Alberta and Boulder Colorado. Hmmm, I kind of already do that. When I retire I think it going to be somewhere very warm.

Have no food or have no gasoline?

No gas!

Do you wish you had sexier feet?

I'm ok with my feet. On more than one occasion I have had people say I have decent feet for a male mountain guide:)
